Brookings School District Hillcrest Elementary School

Brookings,

Built simultaneously with another school for the district, Hillcrest Elementary is 96,630-square-foot new elementary built within just ten feet of the existing occupied school. Designed to enhance the student experience, the building incorporates classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, an early childhood education wing with its own secure entrance, and flexible collaboration spaces located in each section and throughout the school. Administrative areas include staff offices, a nurse’s room, a conference room, and a staff break room to support daily operations.

Shared spaces were designed with both function and community in mind. A commons and cafeteria area, complete with a full commercial kitchen, serves as the heart of the building, while a new gymnasium with bleachers and a library/media center provide space for athletics and academics alike. A secure main entry ensures student safety, and the site includes surfaced courts, rubber playground surfacing, green space, and outdoor learning areas that extend education beyond the classroom.

They continually sat down with our staff to discuss the project status, communicate any potential issues or concerns, and explain their proposed solutions in a manner that was easy to comprehend so that we could provide our input or approval. No matter what was going on, we felt that Hausmann was an extension of our staff and had our best interest in mind." –Summer Schultz, Superintendent
